Students at St John the Evangelist Catholic Parish Primary School, Campbelltown are enjoying new and improved amenities thanks to a $1.23 million investment.
The project, which included the construction of a new toilet block and refurbishment of the canteen, was officially blessed and opened by the Bishop of Wollongong, Most Rev Brian Mascord, on Tuesday 10 December, 2024.
The new student amenities replace outdated facilities with a focus on hygiene, accessibility, and student comfort. They boast 29 new toilets, ensuring ample provision for all students. The previous student amenities were in poor condition and required upgrades to ensure compliance to child protection standards. Along with the upgraded amenities, the increased number of amenities will cater for the future growth of the school.
The revitalised canteen has undergone a complete transformation, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for students to refuel and offers a wider variety of healthy food options to encourage healthy eating habits. The shiny new serving counters and updated appliances create an inviting space for both students and staff, particularly Mrs Stolzenhein, who has served as the school’s canteen manager for 30 years.
The existing canteen is to be upgraded to align with the overall masterplan and future planning for the growth of the school.
St John the Evangelist school principal, Mr Paul Moroney, welcomed the new upgrades which will provide the school with the necessary facilities for many years to come, and cater to expected enrolment growth in the area.
"The new student amenities and canteen that have been built at St John's replace a building that was more than sixty years old,” said Mr Moroney. “This building project provides modern and functional facilities for our community, and enhances the overall aesthetics of our site.”
“The inclusion of individual student toilets in the project provides privacy for students and staff, while promoting a safe environment under our child protection protocols. The canteen, with its modern inclusions and appliances, will be a functional space forthe staff, and an inviting part of the school for students to visit."
The $1.265m project was made possible through a $392,000 grant from the Australian Federal Government and a $871,000 contribution from Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong.
Dr Mike Freelander, Federal Member for Macarthur, attended the event on behalf of the Federal Government.
“I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to help unveil these fantastic facilities, which will make a real difference to the staff & students,” he said. “I am further grateful to be part of a Federal Government that has provided funding to help make these facilities a reality.”
