Inventors Impress at Inaugural 'Innovate for Impact'

19 September 2024

Budding inventors from across the Illawarra showcased their impressive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills at the "Innovate for Impact" event yesterday.

Primary and secondary students from Catholic and public schools joined forces to present innovative solutions to real-world challenges, with projects ranging from life-saving devices to sustainable energy solutions.

One standout invention was "ThermoTrack," a device designed to prevent children and pets from being left unattended in hot cars. Developed by Year 6 students from St Pius X Catholic Primary School in Unanderra, the gadget alerts drivers when the car's internal temperature rises above a dangerous level. This invention was inspired by alarming statistics showing a concerning number of callouts to NSW paramedics for people locked in cars.

The event, a partnership between Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong and the Department of Education, provided students with a platform to connect with industry leaders from organisations such as BlueScope, the University of Wollongong, and i3net.

"Innovate for Impact" not only highlights the exceptional talent within Illawarra schools but also fosters future career pathways in STEM fields by connecting students with potential employers. Organisers emphasised the importance of providing an authentic audience for students, motivating them to push their creative boundaries and develop impactful solutions.
