St Francis Catholic College, Edmondson Park, celebrates the Blessing and Opening of their $40 million expansion.
St Francis Catholic College, Edmondson Park, marked a significant milestone on Tuesday, 12 November, 2024, with the official blessing and opening of its impressive new $40 million facilities. The ceremony, led by Bishop of Wollongong, Most Rev Brian Mascord, was attended by distinguished guests, including CEDoW Director of Schools, Peter Hill and members of the CEDoW leadership team, local dignitaries, community members, and former school leaders.
Br Paul Oakley and Ray Paxton - Edmund Rice Education Australia, Anne Stanley MP - Federal Member for Werriwa were in attendance, along with SFCC Founding Principal, Simon Abernethy, and former CEDoW Director of Schools, Peter Turner - who both received a rockstar greeting as they entered the hall.
The event commenced with a procession featuring a vibrant didgeridoo performance by Thomas Kickett from John Therry Catholic College. Uncle Dave Bell then delivered a Welcome to Country, adding a unique cultural touch to the proceedings.
The event featured several heartwarming moments, such as a moving rendition of the National Anthem by school captain, Jamie Stefanovic, student performers entertaining guests during the official blessing of the new buildings, and a rousing performance of the school song by all 1500 students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
The expansion includes 15 classrooms with breakout spaces and activity areas, a modern library, and a new administration and staff study area. The $ 40.3 million project was made possible through an $8.3 million grant from the NSW Government, and a $31 million contribution from Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong.
Principal Matthew McMahon expressed his delight at the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community, stating, "These new spaces significantly enhance our ability to provide high-quality learning and teaching experiences."
Established in 2017 with just 178 students, St Francis has experienced remarkable growth, now accommodating 1500 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. This reflects the dynamic and expanding Edmondson Park community. With its commitment to continuous improvement and a focus on fostering both academic and spiritual growth, the college is well-positioned to meet the needs of its growing student population.
Mr McMahon acknowledged the "phenomenal growth" and high demand from Catholic families in the area, adding, "Our students and staff are truly grateful for these new additions and excited about the wonderful opportunities they will provide."
